Elkonin Boxes × Speech Recognition
The Project Read Tutor highlights the exact Elkonin Boxes a student missed as they read aloud, then lets them tap each box to hear and see the correct phoneme-grapheme correspondence.

Last week we made a major update to how students receive feedback on their decoding within the Project Read Tutor.
Now, as a student reads a word out loud, we visually highlight the specific Elkonin Boxes they missed and then click on each box to hear (and see) the correct phoneme-grapheme correspondence.
You can try mapping any decodable word into its elkonin boxes here. Individual teachers set up a class within 2 minutes.
The combination of speech recognition and word mapping allows the Tutor to deliver real-time feedback to each student in a way that parallels how they see concepts presented during their phonics block.
Teacher Feedback thus far
The feedback to this update from teachers using the Project Read Tutor in their classroom has been awesome thus far:
“We LOVED the Elkonin boxes today! It was super easy for my kids to use and they're already very used to that format. I loved the x's over each sound they produced incorrectly, it was a great visual for what they decoded correctly and incorrectly. Thank you!”
“I had a student today tell me that the word with the sound boxes was her favorite part of the lesson because she could push on the letter and hear the sound the letters made to make sure she was right.”
We are constantly working to make this tool as helpful for students as possible and your feedback is valuable. If you do try it out, let us know how it goes!
