When Project Read's Tutor Went to Middle School

Last year, Liz DeVargas-Almeida reached out to Project Read about piloting the Tutor with a group of 6th-8th grade students. Despite being in the district since Kindergarten, these students' phonics diagnostic data showed they were struggling to decode CVC words and progress had stalled.

With just 10 minutes a day in a pilot that run just over 6 weeks, their pre/post-pilot growth in outcomes and self-confidence made Liz "emotional."

Liz described the growth of students who previously were not automatically decoding CVC words to being students who could conquer digraphs and even start to decode multisyllabic words with vowel teams.
